India Student Visas

Studying in India requires a student visa application to be submitted and all applicants must first obtain a guaranteed place on a course of study at a recognised Indian educational institution. India study visas may be issued for a single entry to India or as a multiple entry permit and are normally issued for the duration of the applicant’s course of study, however the maximum duration permitted is five years.

Applying for an Indian Student Visa

Indian student visas may be issued as multiple entry permits which allow the holder to travel in and out of India a number of times within the life of the visa. The upper limit of leave granted to study visa applicants is five years, and candidates may complete a series of consecutive courses of study in India so long as the overall duration does not exceed the five-year maximum.

In India, study visas, like work permits tie the applicant to the sponsoring institution and in the case of study visas, to the course in question. They do not grant the opportunity to study in India per se although in some cases it may be possible to switch either the educational institution or the course with special permission from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).

Indian Study Visa Eligibility

Indian study visa applications are based on the candidate having a definite offer of a place on a course of study and evidence of this must be provided as part of the application. Applicants must submit their letter of admission and if this is not possible at the time of application, a successful applicant will be issued a temporary provisional student visa. This temporary visa is not extendable and is granted for a period of three months. Within this period, the applicant must make written evidence of their confirmed place on the course available, otherwise they will be obliged to return to their country of residence.

Applications must include a passport with a minimum validity of six months and medical students will need to obtain either a letter of approval or a certificate of no objection from the Ministry of Health. A similar process will be required for engineering students and students participating in technical course who will need to obtain similar approval from the Department of Education.

Spouse and Dependent Immigration

Student visas are intended as a temporary measure and do not provide applicants with the right to long-term residency in India. However since the maximum period granted under this visa route is five years a candidate may well be living in India for a lengthy period and with this in mind a student visa applicant may bring their immediate relatives with them. The spouse or partner and dependents of a study visa applicant may reside in India for the same period of time granted to the main applicant.
