Canada Visa for Visitors

Short stay visas for Canada are issued for a maximum six-month duration and are granted to those who wish to enter the country for the purposes of tourism, to visit family and friends or to engage in business activities excluding employment. Canadian visas for short visits are referred to by a number of terms including Canadian visit visas and travel visas, however, short stay visas are officially referred to as Temporary Resident Visas or TRVs.

About Temporary Resident Visas – Benefits and Limitations

Citizens of some nations may enter Canada for a short period without the need to apply for a Canadian visa; your Global Visas consultant will be able to advise you whether candidates from your country of residence need to apply or not. However, in most cases, entering Canada for any length of time will require a Canadian visit visa application to be submitted.

Canadian tourist visas allow a candidate to enter and remain in Canada for the duration granted, and require the applicant to return to his or her country of residence when their grant expires. A short-term Canadian visa of this kind will not lead to the opportunity to apply for permanent residency in Canada and does not allow a visa holder to switch into a long-term Canadian immigration service.

The key benefit of a short-term Canadian visa is that unlike long-term solutions for relocation to Canada, it places few demands on the applicant with the key requirements being the ability to financially support themselves whilst in Canada and the genuine intention to return home. A short stay visit visa can be used for studying in Canada so long as the course in question does not exceed the grant of the visa, and travel visas can be used for a range of business activities including visiting conferences and attending meetings. However, a non-Canadian national in Canada on a Temporary Resident Visa status may not undertake any form of employment.

Types of Short term Canadian Visa

In Canada, visas of this kind may be issued as either a single entry permit, a permit for multiple entries to Canada, or as a transit visa, which permits a candidate to travel through the country as part of a longer journey to another final destination.

Single Entry Canadian Visitor Visas

Single Entry Canadian travel visas are issued for a maximum period of six months, however this six month duration can be extended by a further thirty days. Where applicants require a Canadian visa extension this must be applied for whilst the original visa has at least 30 days of validity remaining.

Multiple Entry Canadian Visitor Visas

A multiple entry visa is issued for a period requested in the application, although as with all visa applications it is important to recognise that the duration awarded to a candidate is issued at the discretion of the Canadian immigration case officer. Multiple entry Canadian visa holders may enter and depart from Canada as many times as they wish within the life of the visa.

Canadian Transit Visas

Canadian transit visas are issued for 48 hours and are designed for those who need to enter Canada only as part of a longer journey to another destination.

In all cases, Canadian visa applications for single, multiple or transit visas require candidates to have sufficient funding to finance themselves during their visit to Canada. All applicants must abide by Canadian laws and must not have a criminal record or be seen to pose a security risk to Canada.

Family Immigration

Canadian Temporary Resident Visas are issued as a strictly temporary immigration service and as such, they do not provide the opportunity for the spouse and/or dependents of an applicant to enter Canada with them. All such dependents must apply for a Canadian visa in their own capacity.
