Visiting Australia - the ETA Visa

Australia employs one of the most advanced systems in the world for its short stay tourist and business visas. The Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) is a paperless Australian visa which requires no stamp in the applicant’s passport and permits an applicant to remain in Australia for up to three months at a time within a period of 12 months. The ETA is not available to all countries and your Global Visas immigration consultant will be able to advise whether or not your can apply for an Australia ETA visa. However, for those who are not eligible to apply and for those who wish to remain in Australia for a longer period, the long stay business visa is also available.

Applying to Live and Work in Australia

The 457 visa or Australian work permit is issued as a temporary immigration service designed to help Australian companies to source skilled immigration from overseas. A work permit may ultimately lead to the opportunity to apply for permanent residency in Australia; however, work permits only allow their holders to work for their sponsoring company whose mandatory offer of employment should form the basis of the application. An applicant may switch to a long term visa service whilst already in Australia; however, they must be able to meet the specific requirements of their chosen visa category.

Australia also offers a number of immigration routes which are expressly intended as a means to relocating to Australia permanently. The skilled independent visa is a points based program which aims to attract skilled migrants in professions which feature on the Skilled Occupations List. Applicants are assessed on a number of key factors and if successful, a five year permit will be issued. After four years of living and working in Australia, an applicant may apply for Australian citizenship. Australia also offers a range of other work visas including the skilled sponsored visa, which requires a candidate to be sponsored by either a family member who is settled in Australia or by a state or territory, and the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) which offers a route to permanent residency based upon a prearranged offer of employment.

Australian Business Visas

In Australia, business visas may be state sponsored or non-state sponsored and fall into the three categories of Australian Business Owner Visa, Australian Business Senior Executive Visa, and the Australian Business Investor Visa. In all cases, obtaining sponsorship from a particular state or territory reduces some of the qualification requirements relating to business and personal assets and increases the age limit for applications. However, applicants must secure state sponsorship and will be required to reside in the sponsoring province for at least 2 of the initial 4 years of their visa. The business owner visa requires a minimum net worth and focuses upon a candidate's history of owning or part owning businesses. The business investor visa requires a large investment to be made in the Australian economy while the business senior executive visa is chiefly concerned with a candidate's experience in a senior management role.

Australian Study Visas

Australia welcomes overseas students and provides a range of specific visas for different types of student. Student visas are granted for the duration of an applicant’s course and although limited work may be permitted, study visas do not lead to the opportunity to apply for Australian permanent residence. All student visa applicants must have a guaranteed offer of a place from a bona fide Australia university or college.

Family Visas – Australian Immigration for Dependents

In addition to the Australian work visas and business visa routes to permanent residency, settled status in Australia and ultimately Australian citizenship may be obtained based upon a candidate’s family connections with a sponsoring Australian citizen, permanent resident or in some cases a qualifying New Zealand citizen. The Australian spouse visa, fiancé visa and De facto visa allow a sponsoring Australian to bring their spouse or partner to live in Australia, while a range of other relatives may apply through categories such as the last remaining relative visa, contributory parent visa and Australian child visa.
